Lakhs witness 224 year of thrissur pooram

Lakhs of people including foreign nationals thronged the sprawling Thekkinkadu maidan here witness the confrontation (face to face meeting of 30 richly carisoned elephants, 15 each from paramekkavu and Thrivambady) and Kudamattam (cange of ormamental silk parasols) by the main events of the famous Thrissur pooram on its 224 anniversary today Besides, the music ensem bles of panchayadyam and pandimelam in front of the caparisoned elephants with top-ranked percussionists, was another main attraction in the pooram day.

Over 500 percussionists exhibited their expertise on the percussion instruments like tympan, cymbal, pipe, flute, tuba, frambone, trumpet, brass, woodwind, mouthpiece, tambourine and saxphone for over two hours each side in spite of hot sun of over 40 degrees Celsius.

The Tympanists, however, led the show. The annual pooram fete had its origin in 1798, through a royal declaration of the then Raja Rama Varma who was popularly kown as shakthan Thampuran, a powerful but just ruler of the erstwhile princely state of cochin.

Thampuran had also divinded the main sponsors the pooram into Paremekkovu and Thiruvambady Devaswoms, to lend a competitive adge to the spectacle of sound, light and music. For the convenience of the public who came to view the pooram festivitities, the king had 65 acre teakwood-jungle around the vadakkunnathan tembple cleared/despite strong protests of devotees and the oracle of paramekkavu.

Apert from the main poorams of the paramekkavu and Thinuvambady temples, sight small poorams from nearby temples converged at sannidhanam (Sanctum Sanctorum) from early
morning with those of the main poorams.
Several foreign nationals have withnessed this year’s pooram festival.
